Finding Your Perfect Topper: A Real Guide from Someone Who’s Been There

Hi everyone, this is Melissa. As someone who wears human hair toppers every day, I remember how overwhelming it was to pick out my first one. You’re juggling so many questions: What length? What color? How many clips do I need for my level of hair loss

Let me help simplify it for you. I’m going to walk you through three different hair toppers I personally own and love from Uni Wigs. My hope is that by seeing them on someone with real hair loss, you can get a clearer idea of what might work for you.

First up, I’m going to take this one off. The one I have on right now is called the Savannah.

The Savannah: The Glamorous & Blendable One

”Look at her. She’s gorgeous.”

This is an absolute stunner. The base is a 9”x9” silk top, which means if you look closely, it looks just like my scalp. I really do like that I can blend my hair through the top just like that. This is a 16-inch length, and I love the drama it brings. The hair is Burmese, which means it’s going to dry with a beautiful, natural wave—perfect for me since my own hair is naturally curly.

Now, let’s talk about the cap because this is where it gets real. When you pick out your hair topper, it’s all about your hair loss. For me, I have a lot of thinning here at the top. I started losing my hair when I was about 19 and it just didn’t stop. But that’s okay because there are hair toppers and I absolutely love wearing them.

The Savannah cap is perfect for me because I need a lot of coverage. It has four clips: two at the front and two in the back, plus this amazing halo wire. I like having this halo-wire. It just makes my hair topper feel more secure when it’s on my head. All of my hair toppers have it, and I’m hooked. There’s also an extra grip clip you can use, but I don’t really use it much; I just leave it on there just in case.

Alright, that’s my Savannah. ”Look at that color… She’s so pretty.” Now, let’s move on to something lighter.

The Breeze: The Airy & Effortless One

Next, this one is called the Breeze. The cap size is an 8.5”x9”. This one has a closed lace front here. It’s closed on the edge, which means you don’t see any fraying—I really like that detail.

And it is so airy. Especially if you are in a warm climate… I mean, Breeze is her name, go figure! It has the halo wire too, but you can take it off if you like.

Let me show you how I put this one on. I place it facing front, pull my hair back, and wrap the halo wire around my ears. You want to make sure your clips are open, and then you just flip it over. Just like that.

A great feature of the Breeze? I don’t need to blend any hair in with this one. This one can go right here. I have a big forehead, so I can actually make this one come as low as I want without any blending. I just clip it in at the back.

And there she is! This one is 14 inches. She’s pretty too, and very airy. I’m in Texas, and she’s not hot at all.

The Upgrade Courtney: The Versatile & Chic One

The last one I’m going to show you is the Upgrade Courtney, with a 7”x8” base. This one is a 12-inch bob. Inside, you’ll see a little lace here at the top. It has pre-cut layers and is also made from that wonderful Burmese hair.

You have this small, defined area of mono—not a whole lot, but just enough to give you a natural appearance. You can part it in any direction right there within that base. This is different from the Breeze, which allows for a free part anywhere in that bigger, lace-front area.

She is nice, too! I love all of these for updos because I can pull my natural hair up (and like I said, I’m in Texas and it’s hot!).

It has four clips and, of course, the halo-wire. Now, this one, like the Savannah, you can blend in your hair. If you got a little bit of hair at the top, you can pull that through. It gives that more natural appearance because you’re integrating your own bio hair.

”Look at this one. I like her. She’s a cute little bob.”

A Final Piece of Advice

Now, as you can tell, my natural hair is quite short. But here’s the magic: ”This one is perfect length, but I could wear the 14, I can wear the 16, and my hair just blends.” The Savannah, with its larger cap size and more hair, completely covers the fact that my bio hair is this short.

So, you can wear any of these, all three of these, even if you have short hair, because they blend in so well.

I hope this helped give you a better idea of what hair topper you might need or want to try, and a real-life look at what the cap construction looks like on someone with severe hair loss.
